  17. <p>    Border disputes between Senegal and its northern neighbor
  18. Mauritania are not unusual, thanks to the fondness of
  19. Mauritanian camels for Senegalese grass. Thus when two
  20. Senegalese peasants were shot near the village of Diawara last
  21. week the incident seemed unremarkable. But, fanned by the
  22. Senegalese media, the deaths ignited long-smoldering ethnic and
  23. social tensions between the black Senegalese and the Mauritanian
  24. Moors. More than 200 died when civilians from both countries
  25. attacked one another in border towns as well as in Senegal's
  26. capital, Dakar, and in Mauritania's two major cities. Each
  27. country used its army to restore order.

  29. <p>    On Friday violence flared again in Dakar as pillaging of
  30. Mauritanian shops continued and returning Senegalese told
  31. stories of Mauritanian atrocities in Nouakchott. As 20,000
  32. Mauritanians, protected by army troops, gathered at Dakar's
  33. international fairground for repatriation, the Senegalese
  34. government sent a warning: if Mauritanian security forces proved
  35. to have been involved in the killing, the Senegalese reserved
  36. the right to retaliate.
